Keys are a big deal in the Arcade and 16-bits ports and the Nes manual mentions them, but I can't remember seeing them in the game.
So I thought that perhaps they were added when you enter a Treasure Room, or perhaps hidden under other bonus items or weapons.
So I decided to skip the Treasure Rooms and pick up as little bonus items as possible (seeing how they can pop up in front of you, it is really hard to miss them all). Skipping the weapons seems too extreme for me.
But in the end, no other passages opened and no different ending.
