This time I decided to make a video on an awesome Exclusive Pioneer LaserActive title, this one is Pyramid Patrol.

To make an EXTREMELY LONG story as short as possible, there was once 2 alien civilizations, the Mu and the Atlanteans. They fought for many centuries and the Atlanteans were basically all defeated and the remaining few hundred of them surrendered to the Mu and were imprisoned in a pyramid on our 5th planet, Mars and put to a deep sleep there.

Centuries later Humans were born on Earth and lived in co-existence with the Mu, until one day the Mu decided to leave us on Earth alone to evolve by ourselves. Centuries have passed and the Humans technology has progressed very far. The Humans started to explore the planets surrounding them and found the Pyramid.

After excavating the pyramid, the humans found an ancient artifact and decided to take it back to earth for study. However, once taking the artifact from its rightful place the pyramid awoke all the Atlanteans. Once the Atlanteans realized they were now free they decided war on the humans would be the best way to get Earth (their original home) back.

The Mu received a signal stating that the pyramid was once again active and that the Atlanteans were once again free. So the Mu contacted the Humans on Earth giving instructions on how to build spacecraft powerful enough to fight back against the Atlanteans since the Mu cannot do it for us across the vast empty void of space.

So the humans build the fighter spacecraft exactly as the Mu tell them, and take the fight against the Atlanteans on Mars where the Pyramid was found. The war for humankind has begun. Do the humans have what it takes to stop the Atlanteans?

This is an old LaserDisc game made in 1993, Licensed by Pioneer in conjunction with SEGA and developed by Taito. It is one of the most popular games for the LaserActive and was used on every L.A. Kiosk out there. The only thing that came close was the 3DO version, but overall the LaserActive version is by far superior. With real analogue uncompressed FMV for backdrops, and an incredible sounding PCM soundtrack.

The graphics in the game are very good for a LaserActive game with great looking streaming backgrounds and enemys that blend well with the background using sprites from the Sega PAC. The sprite designs look pretty cool. I like the overall graphics in the game, they really set the mood and pull you into the action (for 1993 anyways).

The sound effects are decent (repetitive but decent), using the sega pac as the sound generator as always (for Mega LD games). The sounds of the bullets and weapons in general are what you would expect from a sega cd or genesis cart. Decent overall but nothing great. The music is great though and the sound quality is in Roland Sound Space and sounds really great in Surround Sound!

The control in the game is like any streaming LD game from back in its time, and everything moves spot on with great accuracy. As long as you are accurate enough to aim, then you can kill most of the enemys, although sometimes there are so many on screen at one time it feels truly impossible to stop them all. Even with a charge shot, some enemys will be grouped together so much you cant stop them from ramming your ship.

The games difficulty is somewhat hard on easy mode (once you get to stage 7 that is), and the Normal mode feels REAL TOUGH. I have trouble beating Stage 4 on Normal mode. Don't even think of playing on HARD MODE unless your completely INSANE or your just "The Wizard" at games!

Bottom line: There aren't very many kick ass great games for the LaserActive, but this is definitely one of the better ones. It is absolutely 100% worth picking up if you own a Pioneer LaserActive.

This game is in 480i, and features RSS (Roland Sound Space) surround sound.

PLEASE NOTE: Some of the enemy shots look semi invisible with a bluish purple aura around them. This is due to the deinterlacing of the picture on this video. There is no way around this as of now.
