QEMU Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) -- Tribute to NVIDIA OpenGL
~~~ Knights of the Old VOGONS ~~~
"In YEARS of deleting posts and banning the project qemu-3dfx, out of Unprofessionalism in Moderator, Mystery SITH with Dark Forces the Last Apprentice DARTH TheEMPIRE unleashed a sadistic extortion cum 💰Donation💰 upon an unsuspecting Retro Gaming galaxy.
Crushing all emulation into "Trash"Boxes or "JUNK_PC"em by weaponizing both CPU virtualization and GPU acceleration, it has left the VOGONS Jedi Order scattered and vulnerable, as countless Good Old Windows Games failed in latest Windows Updates and many more swear allegiance to the DARK side.
In the skies above VOGONS forums, a call for fans' mods, source-ports and alternatives engages the forces of DARTH TheEMPIRE in a desperate effort to halt the SITH's 64-bit legacy-free Retro Gaming galactic domination upon the soon befall 32-bit software Apocalypse ...."
🤣🤣 Have FUN and a GOOD LAUGH on the opening prologue, typical of all STAR WARS themed games, QEMU featuring qemu-3dfx brings on another iconic STAR WARS themed games into the retro gaming scene in pristine condition with just a Fixed/NoCD EXE. This is the retailed 4-CD 1.0 release with last official 1.03 patch applied. The game's advanced graphics "Frame Buffer Effects" and "Soft Shadows" are fully restored with NVIDIA GPUs on modern Windows and Linux, delivering the BEST and HIGHEST quality in retro gaming. The "Frame Buffer Effects" depends on NV_register_combiners and NV_register_combiners2 while "Soft Shadows" depends on WGL_NV_render_texture_rectangle. While the game also supported ATI extensions circa-2000, AMD GPUs dropped most of them in their recent Windows drivers update. Intel had no business interests in OpenGL PC gaming back then, so it left no legacy to maintain. A tribute to NVIDIA OpenGL, it is likely the ONLY GPU that retains many obscured legacy OpenGL extensions used widely in PC games and consistent on both Windows and Linux. MESA OpenGL with AMD GPUs retains ATI_fragment_shader which the game can also utilize. It would be interesting to check it out if it could restore "Frame Buffer Effects" on Linux with QEMU virtual machine. The game also supported ATI TruForm with extension ATI_pn_triangles. Unfortunately, the extension was short-lived and never being well maintained.
This is the advantage of QEMU MESAGL pass-through. The project took on the troubles to support the legacy of vendor-specific OpenGL extensions that matter for PC games. Past and existing solutions, VirtualBox ChromiumGL, VMware SVGA3D and QEMU Virgil 3D are all based on API "re-rendering" rather then "direct forwarding".
Fear not, the game is available from GOG for just $9.99.
