Id Software released Quake II in 1997. The sequel to the immensely popular Quake went in a more military sci-fi direction, instead of the demon slaying route. This time, you play a soldier, his drop pod knocked off course, and you have to fight your way through alien facilities to reach their leader and take him out.

Quake II's biggest claim to fame wasn't its campaign, but it's solid multiplayer. You could connect via a LAN, or over the Internet, and the modding community fully embraced Quake II, producing thousands of custom maps, mods, and full conversion mods that turned Quake II into a completely new game. The popularity of Quake II also meant that Id Software released several expansions to the main campaign. Eventually, Id would make the source code for the Quake II engine open source.

In 2019, Nvidia would use that source code to produce a revised engine which replaced the software lighting in the game with raytracing. The ambient lighting from the outdoor sky, lights on the wall, lights on the chest of enemies, and even the light produced by explosions and your weapons were all produced using real-time raytracing. The effect was amazing, various surfaces now had this glossy finish, and dark areas became pitch black. It was like Quake II was a whole new game again. This version of the game is free on Steam and uses the asset files of the copy of Quake II you might already own, or it will download the files for the original demo.
