Unreal Tournament - The Game That Revolutionized the Arena Shooter
For years, Id Software dominated the online arena shooter space with Quake and Quake 2's multiplayer modes. Epic decides to release a game in the Unreal universe, which is all multiplayer. The first true online arena shooter focused game ever made, and it set a high bar for its time. UT used an updated version of the Unreal Engine. Unreal would be re-released on this engine as Unreal Gold. UT99 made it easy to mod the game, made it easy to enable and disable mods from within the game itself, and included a server browser so you didn't need 3rd party tools like GameSpy.
The classic weapons from Unreal were reimagined into vastly improved versions, and new weapons all with their own unique alt-fire modes were added to the game. New to UT were the improved missile launcher, plasma rifle, translocator which let you teleport around the map, and the impact hammer. The GOTY edition added Relic pick-ups that could be enabled in a game using their Mutators. These relics gave you regenerating health, increased damage, increased speed, instantly respawned you upon death, or left a nasty surprise behind when you die that explodes like a nuke.
UT99 had one of the latest modding communities of its time, rivaling those of Quake and Quake 2. Most of these mods are still available to download. Like Unreal, UT99 is not on any online stores and is only available as a download from the Internet Archive. You can still get updates to the game, including the latest update which restore the server browser functionality and adds better compatibility with modern PCs.
