Epic Mega Games shocked the gaming world when they introduced Unreal to the world in 1998. The technology Unreal was built upon would turn Epic Games into a force to reckon with. Today, the Unreal Engine is the 2nd most adopted game engine in the world, behind Unity (though that's changing for obvious reasons).

In Unreal, you play an unnamed prisoner being transported to a prison colony on a distant moon on the transport ship Vortex Rikers. The ship crashes on the planet Na Pali for mysterious reasons, and you find yourself fighting for your life to find your way off the planet. All the while, the locals, the Nali, see you as a messiah come to save them from the sky demons known as the Skaarj. You find various weapons along the way, the infinite ammo Dispersion Pistol, which upgrades with new parts over time. The Automag, which you can double up for more firepower. The Stinger, which fires crystal shards that do tones of damage. The Flak Cannon that turns enemies into salsa. The GES Biorifle, that fires globs of deadly glowing green goo at enemies. The Razor Jack, a gun that launches flying blades of death. The ASMD, a weapon that fires energy shockwaves, with an interest alt-fire that does lots of damage when used in combo with regular fire. And, the 8-Ball, a missile launcher that fires missiles at a target individually, or all at once.

Unreal was re-released on the updated Unreal Tournament engine. This version included the Return to Na Pali expansion, where you play the same character. Only now that character is voiced, and is recruited by the military to help them fight the Skaarj, and eventually escape to freedom into deep space.
