Ranking Street Fighter 5's newcomers (Re-upload from 2021)
43When Capcom adds a new character into the Street Fighter franchise, the newcomer has the potential to enhance both the immediate game and the franchise as a whole.
Last week we ranked Street Fighter 4's newcomers to see who wound up being a good call and who fell flat, and we've given the same treatment to Street Fighter 5's 12 fresh faces (Luke will eventually be the 13th) on this week's podcast.
This is obviously a fairly subjective subject, but allow me to offer some general parameters so that we're judging these characters by at least a somewhat similar standard. Generally, I look to see if a character garners enough fan favor to both enhance the game they're in and be a potential addition to future Street Fighter titles that audiences would get especially hype over.
This is all achieved across a handful of different points of appeal (or the opposite) as Street Fighter resonates with a few different crowds. How a character impacts the competitive and casual scenes in terms of gameplay is a big deal as players can easily begin to love or dread being involved in a match with said character.
Rashid, for example, proved an extremely popular tournament pick because of his overpowered abilities, but that didn't exactly translate to a ton of charisma for Mr. Of the Turbulent Wind. Many associate him with frustration and chapters of SF5 that were particularly imbalanced, and so that hurts his overall score despite his being frequently used.
