Picking Street Fighter 6's launch roster (Re-upload from 2021)
33Launch rosters in fighting games set the tone for if you're willing to put down your hard earned $60 or $70 bills. The last two major Street Fighter entries have launched with about 16 characters, and Velociraptor and I sat down to hammer out who we might expect to find in Street Fighter 6's initial release.
We've seen amazing feats pulled off in fighting games in recent times with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's launch cast, and less than amazing with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's initial roster. Hoping to avoid the latter, we break down who we think the biggest inclusions should be, based on past statements and actions from Capcom, along with potentially a few surprise picks.
Some of the choices here are obvious, as Capcom once told us that Ryu and Chun-Li will be in every Street Fighter game, so the list starts off with them, before heading into the territory of characters who are not as iconic.
While this list is definitely heavy on Street Fighter 2 cast members, we also highlight some people from the Street Fighter Alpha games as well, since the game might be based around time travel and revisiting moments from the past.
We're expecting to see Street Fighter 6 announced at the next Capcom Cup, which is currently scheduled to take place in 2022 and feature 32 of the world's best competitors selected from the Capcom Pro Tour online series of events.
If this matches up with prior releases of Street Fighter, the game would follow about a year later and be released in the early part of 2023, before March 31st, when Capcom's fiscal year is set to end.
