Ranking Street Fighter 4's newcomers (Re-upload from 2021)
Every new Street Fighter title has brought with it brand new characters as the ever expanding franchise roster grows more and more diverse, but not all newcomers are hits. In fact, we've seen many a Street Fighter newcomer fail to ever be invited back to later rosters by developers.
While many of us are understandably speculating about the future now as Street Fighter 5 nears its end, I'd like to zip back to the past and take a look at the new characters introduced in Street Fighter 4. In our latest podcast video, I order all 11 of these previously unplayable fighters in terms of how good a job I feel Capcom did on them.
It's been a few years since Street Fighter 4 was under the main stage lights, and so we could all probably use a refresher in terms of which characters were first made playable in it. In no particular order they were: Abel, C. Viper, Gouken, Oni, Juri, Rufus, El Fuerte, Hakan, Seth, Decapre, and Poison.
Poison may come off as a bit of a surprise because she was around in Street Fighter 3 as Hugo's manager, and was somewhat prominently featured in Final Fight before that. It wasn't until Ultra Street Fighter 4, however, that she was actually playable in a fighting game.
Which characters were fun to play, interesting story/personality additions to the SF canon, and really garnered a sense of charisma with fans? Which fresh roster members fell flat, unable to ignite that spark and draw a decent following?
Check out the full podcast segment video below and please hit us up in the comments with your reactions to the list. If you disagree with my picks, who do you think were the most and least successful newcomers in SF4?
