RAW Gameplay - NVidia SHIELD Impressions: Asphalt Xtreme [ANDROID]
Raw gameplay.
Asphalt Xtreme [ANDROID]
DEVICE: NVidia Shield Pro (2019)
As usual from Gameloft = Pay2Win.
This is one of the worst ports to the Shield I have seen.
Firstly, you receive no input indications at the menu screens, so knowing where your selection focus is... it is pure guess work. Really thing about how important a feature that is. Asphalt 8 came out in 2013, and you can at least see what is happening in the menus when you load it up on the Shield... Xtreme came out in 2016.... so even less effort was put into making this work.
Like Asphalt 8, I had played this game before and made some reasonable progress. I think it was a period of one or two months of free time at work... I wanted a new game to play, and I was specifically in the mood for a racer. I reached the highest level and furthest progress you can accomplish in this game without spending money... I think it was Level 14 or 18.
Pay2Win... there was no replay for rewards on previous campaign races, and the rewards for daily tasks and non-campaign events were so minimal that it was genuinely impossible to make any more progress for free.. unless I was willing to repeat those races and tasks every single day for at least a full year (and the progress would only get slower and slower trying to play this for free).
Having said that... all the cars, races, upgrades I had earned and unlocked... GONE. ERASED!
Very greedy and dishonest... and as I have displayed in my Asphalt 8 video.. this is not a "mistake"... this is not unique to this game, nor is it unique to just Gameloft games on the mobile platform. This is a common MicroTransaction scam in this part of the world of gaming.
Just like the other Asphalt games, this plays well enough as a racer. It is fun to race as an ultra arcade racer when the game lets you race fairly. It also has the same cheat mechanics of cheating you out of a win by messing with your controls every now and then, making a collision unavoidable. Giving the AI power boosts once you get far enough into the game to try and provoke you into spending money on instant upgrades so that you can win based on $$$ spent rather than skill.
Same harassment system to get you to buy car packs, currency packs, etc.
I will say this though; When I originally played this back in 2016, they were also implementing a token-per-race system... so you had an extra set of provocations to make you want to spend more money because you would run out of tokens. That appears to have been removed, but it does not make it any less of a scam.
And lastly... the Shield can connect to the internet by Wi-Fi... it is a great device. But why would I bother doing that when I have it sitting right next to a router and can get a superior, hardline ethernet connection setup? So in this game I could not access the multiplayer races because I had to be using Wi-Fi? WTF!?!
That Wi-Fi only restriction has been a "thing" Gameloft have done with many of their other games. You might think it makes sense for mobile devices to save people from using too much of their data... but... the customer base is expected to flush money down the toilet on MicroTransactions... so why care? Unless it is to reduce the risk of any game-time expenses going into any other pockets outside of GameLofts?
SCAM-GRIND!!!
