A previously barren player opens their map with an eagerness that most people reserve for Christmas. Visions of becoming the 'Big One' dance in their head. A whole new world suddenly appears before them, each landmark represented by a menu item. The thought of what they can accomplish is enough to keep them playing for hours on end. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes the player on an adventure that spans from sweeping plains to desolate deserts. The new world is a vast landscape full of new things to discover and enemies out for blood.
While the story line of Red Dead Redemption 2 may not be as epic as some other stories, it still has a place among them due to its sheer credibility. It is the year 1899 and the player assumes control of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw running with a gang that he cannot seem to escape from. The gang's leader, Dutch Van der Linde, has been on the run since his crimes caught up to him and has made it his mission to get revenge. Arthur starts out as a bad man with a heart of gold, but as the story progresses he becomes more ruthless and violent.
Red Dead Redemption 2 does an incredible job at putting you in the shoes of each character it introduces. You get to see every angle of their personality, good or bad. This makes for some very interesting interactions between NPCs who aren't necessarily friends with each other. One moment you will be trying to stop an attack on a town, the next you are playing poker with them until you lose all your money. Rockstar did a great job of creating a safe haven for outlaws that was believable. Even if the player does not enjoy or relate to what is going on in the game, there is something to please even the most pained soul.
While Red Dead Redemption 2 has a powerful story line and compelling gameplay, it does have its flaws. The player moves abnormally slow when in combat and when they are on foot. If the player gets knocked down from an attack, there is no way to get up besides crawling (if they are lucky enough to not get shot while down). These flaws do not take away from the game too much, but they can be difficult to deal with.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an example of what Rockstar does best. It creates a world that takes you back in time and lets you experience things that would have been commonplace for the people of that time. However, it does not create a world where the player is forced to do certain things in order to advance the story line. It gives you freedom and says 'Go out there and be whatever type of outlaw you want.' The players' choices dictate how the game ends and how they see their character evolve throughout the journey.
