Repton 3 Public Domain Screens Part 4
Continuing with the middle levels of the "Agony" set. The first thing one notices about Screen D is the white colour of the walls and rocks; in the original BBC Micro version the colours are fully redefinable, and many designers have taken advantage of this to give levels colour schemes other than the classic four. Sometimes the results are ghastly (I especially can't stand levels that change the background colour to anything other than black) but sometimes they can be quite appealing, usually when they don't stray too far from the norm. This white colour scheme is one of the ones I like (and it is also used in one level of the upcoming release Repton: The Lost Realms).
The level itself presents us with some interesting spirit puzzles. In the top-left, each spirit just needs nudging into the nearby cage, which is not too hard. (This is an example of a level that becomes much harder, but not impossible, if played on the updated game engine, since the top two spirits would instead start out circling the outer wall.) The lower spirit puzzle is much more intricate, since the rocks need to be positioned to connect all the cages, which must be done with care as it's easy to spoil things by taking away a vital diamond or earth square too soon.
Screen E has a similar puzzle in its top-left, but harder this time, as the cages are all in the centre, and so the bottom spirits must be diverted to the outer wall first and then to the cages, while the upper spirit must be dealt with separately as shown. Then Screen F, likely inspired by Toccata F, is a fast-paced skull maze that includes spirits, monsters and a complex rock puzzle; fortunately more time capsules are provided than are necessary.
The music for this video is "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen.
