Today I'll be playing Atari Flashback Classics Volume 1. Two new Atari Collections just came out for PS4 and Xbox One, and features 50 games in each collection. There are 9 arcade cabinets and 41 Atari cartridges, and this is an important distinction because you're not just getting Atari 2600 games. Included in the collection are 9 full-on arcade machines complete with online leaderboards, local and online multiplayer, and automatically saves progress even if the application closes. Which is nice when trying to see how far you can get on games like Tempest or Black Widow. Each of these games is fleshed out with loads of customability as well. A lot of the original cabinets used trackballs and dials, and the developers did a fantastic job of mapping this games to the ps4 controller. The only game I had to change the defaults was Tempest, and all I did was adjust the sensitivity. As for the pong controller, make sure you hold the thumbstick like a dial, then everything will make sense. Each of the arcade cabinets is completely playable with the dualshock 4. I had low expectations for the 2600 catalog, but I was impressed that some of the games still held my attention, like Yar's Revenge, Dodge Em and Steeplechase. But let's face it, half of the games can only be enjoyed by someone that's high. And do we really need 3 versions of Atari 2600 football? It's cool you can check out scans of the manual and box art. Some unlockables like promotional art or commercials would have been nice, and the achievements list is pretty fun, but could have been more comprehensive. Overall Atari Flashback Classics is must-have compilation for anyone new or seasoned in retro gaming. I wouldn't normally review a compilation but I felt like this one really needed some attention. I'll be looking back at many of these games individually and I look forward to reading the comments for recommendations on where to begin.
