Good Old Games have developed into a truly amazing service for re-releases of great games, and after such RPG heavy-hitters as Might & Magic 1-9, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale 1-2, Planescape Torment, Betrayal at Krondor, Realms of Arkania 1-3 and the early work of Richard Garriot, time has now finally come to Ultima VII - a roleplaying classic if there ever was one and easily one of the pinnacles of ambitious story-driven RPGs in the pre-Bioware era.

I've previously confessed my embarrassing lack of experience with earlier entries in this ground-breaking series, and I must now further increase my shame and dishonor by admitting that even the mighty Ultima VII is more or less completely unknown territory for me. Well, this GOG release is as good an excuse as any to sit down and finally play it...

When it comes to U7, the obligatory mod mention goes to "Exult" which provides a nice bit of convenience by letting you play the game as a modern Windows application (complete with high resolutions and emulation-style pixel smoothing) instead of relying on DOSBox;
