Jaleco's Rod Land is a cute and quirky Japanese arcade game for up to two-players. You play as Tam and Rit, a pair of fairy siblings, trying to save their mother who was kidnapped by a demon and placed at the top of a high tower. To save their mom, the siblings must climb the tower, face various challenges, and defeat a few bosses.

The game is very similar to Bubble Bobble, in that you must defeat every enemy on each screen to advance. Tam and Rit are armed with magic wands which trap enemies in a magical force field. They can then slam the enemies on the ground to defeat them, or to bludgeon other enemies. Each sibling is also given a magical ladder. They can only summon one, so when they call it again, the one they placed disappears.

Defeated enemies leave behind various bombs. Some fly around the screen, bouncing off the walls until they hit an enemy, some are rockets that launch horizontally away from the player. Some turn into bombs that bounce like a ball until they hit an enemy, others create a huge explosion that can take out several nearby enemies, and others create shockwaves that take out enemies to the left and right horizontally. Enemies defeated with bombs will leave behind a card with the picture of fruit on it that gives extra points.

The bosses launch mini-enemies to attack the player. One of these is a special red enemy which turns into a bomb when defeated. These can be used to defeat the bosses. The final boss is the only one in the game with multiple phases.
