Samurai Spirits Zero Arcade
Following the revitalization of SNK after its collapse in 2001, the company decided that it would be worthwhile to create another game in the largely-defunct Samurai Shodown series. As part of their reorganization, development duties were given over to the relatively-unknown Yuki Enterprise, which had mainly only created simulation and board games for the Simple 2000 series of PlayStation 2 games in Japan, and had no experience in developing fighting games. This announcement caused considerable unease among series fans.
In spite of this, SNK managed to raise excitement by announcing that Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator and author of the Rurouni Kenshin manga and anime series, was hired to design some of the new characters, and they were gradually revealed by way of silhouettes on the official website, and slowly showing the official artwork. Word finally got out that the game was to be a true prequel to the rest of the series, taking place two years before Samurai Shodown. This created its own issues with the series timeline.
The gameplay was sped up slightly from Samurai Shodown IV, and the button layout was changed again.
The Slash/Bust system of the last few games was done away with, and each character now only had one version, though in several cases, the Bust mode was replaced by a new character of very similar setup.
Rasetsumaru is hinted to existing in Samurai Shodown 64: Warriors Rage but is introduced in Samurai Shodown V as his own character.
In the creators' commentary regarding his introduction, it was revealed that he was a design created by series illustrator, Shiroi Eiji, as a "dark Haohmaru". Unlike Rera, he is a separate entity from Haohmaru and shouldn't be confused as a part of Haohmaru's subconscious.
He is a bloodthirsty demon from the dark world of Makai, which was opened up by Shiro Tokisada Amakusa many years ago. Rasetsumaru can never assuage his thirst for killing. Because he doesn't clean his blade, it has turned the color of blood from the hundreds of people he has killed. He learns the existence of Haohmaru, an incredibly strong samurai who looks like him, and tries to find him in Hinowa to kill him. He finds Haohmaru at a temple a year later, but it is really a nun (implied to be Yumeji Kurokouchi) disguised as an illusion of him. Claiming him to be his/her final opponent, Yumeji decapitates him.
Parallel to Rera's fighting style with Nakoruru, Rasetsumaru is the former "Rasetsu/Bust" form of Haohmaru. He mirrors several of his counterpart's normal attacks but has a different move set, especially with a more limited arsenal that focuses on more erratic tactics such as extra sword-swings and more brute force with the desire to taste blood.
The techniques he shares with Haohmaru are variations of his Senpuu Retsu Zan and Kogetsu Zan. His Senpuu Retsu Zan: Setsu (Whirlwind Rending Slash: Temple) flies up from ground at a diagonal arc (unlike Bust/Rasetsu Haohmaru), and his Nagi Yaiba (Calm Blade) acts as a proximity reversal. He also possesses his Gouha (Strong Blast), Haohmaru's original shoulder charge, as one of his many tools to focus more on close-range compared to Haohmaru's more well-rounded kit.
His control over the Senpuu Retsu Zan seems greater than the former as he possess a similar technique known as Senpuu Ha (Whirlwind Wave), where he slashes along the ground for a windy-dust blast. He also possesses a variation of the technique as his primary finisher, the Tenha Dankuu Retsu Zan (Heaven Supreme Severing Air Rending Slash), another one of Bust/Rasetsu Haohmaru's techniques.
His Shitatari (Death Curse) can also fill up his power gauge at the cost of a portion of his own health, as Rasetsumaru even resorts to cutting himself. His fatality however, also involves him resorting to gouging out the innards or heart of his foe.
