Sawtooth-like Special Effect using 2A03 Pulse - 'Hopeless Romantic' (FearofDark)「MIDI Transcription」
I decided to investigate a little further using an export and viewing the waveform/spectrograph in Audacity but noticed a particular sawtooth pattern.
TL:DW or CBF watching this video? Basically @FoDSteve plays the scrambled arpeggio quickly to simulate noise, then cuts it short, and which due to the displaced waveform the sound system linearly neutralises/centres the waveform, which in itself is still a change in position and thus generates a single sawtooth wave form at each note cut. Because the pattern editor runs 18.6 lines per second and the note is cut short every second line (albeit with a miniscule 2 tick delay), this allows the waveform to be consistently heard as a sawtooth running at 9.3Hz (incorrectly stated as 19hz in the video). While humans can't exactly hear that, we can hear the abrupt stops and the start and end of the waveform more readily which according to fourier transform generates a wide range of overtones which makes it easier to hear and is also why sawtooth makes a good bass instrument sample in general.
Interestingly Audacity's fourier transform picks this up as around the base clockrate (224 hz) and 448hz etc. which if you listen to the wikipedia 220hz sample, is very close: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:220_Hz_anti-aliased_sawtooth_wave.ogg
However if you listen very carefully and you watch the spectrogram, the spectrogram doesn't closely follow this frequency band and the sawtooth sounding effect fades as the note scramble climb progresses, so I guess it really isn't exactly a sawtooth we're hearing, but a sawtooth-like effect, but we're being fooled all along.
Anyway the end result is this weird electro shift thing, i dunno im not musically trained, but it sounds good. cTrix kinda replicated this effect in his Amiga concert using a synth generator or some saw-like sample but instead of running at ~9Hz he's alternating between Ab and G.
