0In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening which is the best Zelda game, you can steal from the shopkeeper in Mabe Village with some well-timed chicanery. But the game doesn't just let you get away with it...
The shop in Mabe Village has some very necessary items for sale at very unnecessary prices. The shovel costs 200 rupees, and the bow costs an absurd 980 rupees. Corporate greed is a scourge on our society!
The shopkeeper will keep an eye on you as you walk around his store, turning to face you wherever you might be. However, if you grab an item off the shelf, and walk behind and around the shopkeeper so that he is facing to the right as you walk out the door, you can steal items from him!
There's a little bit of timing to it. The shopkeeper will turn to face Link on set intervals. But some of these intervals are longer than others. In essence, he will do one short turn, then one long turn. So what I like to do is stand above him as he does his short turn, then walk to the right side of the room as he does his long turn. That way, you'll have plenty of time to walk out the store as he's facing the right wall.
If you can successfully steal an item, you'll get it for free! Sort of.
From that point on, characters will no longer refer to you by the name you chose on the file select. Instead, they will call you THIEF.
Furthermore, if you ever return to the shop, the merchant will STRIKE YOU DOWN WITH LIGHTNING and you will die. But like... after that he just kinda forgets about it and you can go back to stealing. Back to thievery. Back to your swashbuckling.
