Rules so far:
-No switching to the Dog in an active combat area unless absolutely necessary
-Dog must not be dropped to 0 HPs
-Pixie Dust, Wings, and Call Beads are not allowed
-Alchemy restrictions to be determined
-Bone Crusher banned after Thraxx; all other Swords banned
-Horn Spear only allowed for a case of That One Boss or for demonstration purposes; all other Spears banned other than Bronze Spear
-All Collars other than Leather Collar banned
-Jade Disc, Moxa Stick, and Chocobo Egg banned for Antiqua and Gothica
-Armor Polish banned for Antiqua until Oglin Caves
-Most rules disabled for convenience in non-threatening areas

Rule change explanation: the Collar boosts in general are big enough when the Dog's Physical DEF is already high enough from the insane growths and I'd rather try to have him play as a Glass Cannon where I can. Leather Collar is fine when it doesn't cut nearly enough damage to contribute to the insanity. As for the continued banning of given Charms into Gothica, the new region here, again, this is a challenge and I don't need them here.


While Horace Highwater is still my favorite of the Evermore leaders, Gothica is my favorite of the regions. Don't worry, the upcoming parts will provide my deeper reasons for that. And yes, Gothica is medieval-based. The new enemy type, the Hedgadillo, wears medieval armor which you wouldn't expect from either hedgehogs or armadillos, and the local town, Ivor Tower town, has the makings of a medieval castle town, complete with banners. Of course, there's only so much to talk about in a part generally showcasing what NPCs have to say about local events. The most noteworthy thing is that a guy named Lance will never show up to provide his spell or his bargain ingredient selling services if you just take his treasures without permission. He's actually rather nice, thankfully, so on your own playthroughs, be sure to do business with him actively as thanks; it might just help down the road.

Also, the game provides 4 Amulets of Annihilation available to grab if the player didn't come here with any, so that they have just enough to get all of the armor pieces from the peddler in Ivor Tower Alley AND the Ticket of Exhibition, the latter being required to progress as what will happen in the next part. One is notably hidden in the fields screen, probably why this is deemed a case of The Dev Team Thinks Of Everything as a measure against a case of Unwinnable By Mistake.

Oh, and I mentioned early about how the player characters' growths do show how Secret of Evermore has a sense of handling level ups well. Here, I point out how SoE has progression outweigh grinding. The other side of the coin will be mentioned about later, believe me.
