Secret Of Monkey Island Part One: Three Trials Getting The Crew Together
1One of the very vague things in this game is the concept of a crew for your journey to Monkey Island. How many crew members can you get? How many crew members can you get? Who should be on the crew? What skills do you need to look for in crew members?
The good thing about all of those questions is that they are virtually irrelevant. You can only get three crew members, you must get three crew members, and they will always be the same three people.
With that being said, none of the three crew members: Meathook, Carla, or Otis, have any remotely related skills to the current job of sailing a ship. Instead, they are incredibly useless as will be made evident in Part Two.
To get the crew members Carla will join automatically once she is conversed with, Meathook is pretty much the same once you find him except that you need to pet his murderous, winged beast, and Otis will require the most work.
To get Meathook it is necessary to have acquired the rubber chicken from the Witch Doctor's house in the town. In this special edition it is very obvious that it is a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle but the original version had no icons for the items you acquired so you had to tell Guybrush to "Look" at it in order to find out that it wasn't an actual chicken. With that being said, it is fairly obvious what it is for at this point.
For Otis it is necessary to melt the lock to get him out of prison since you used the file that his aunt Tillie sent to him in order to steal the Idol of Many Hands (which mysteriously has no hands). To melt the lock the grog from the SCUMM bar is necessary for the job. If you mess up and melt a cup away you can simply go back to the bar and loot some more mugs and then start the process over again.
Get the crew and be ready to move on with the ship: the Sea Monkey.
