The Simpsons: Bart vs. the World (SMS) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Flying Edge's 1993 license-based platformer for the Sega Master System, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the World.
Played through all stages. This version is missing some stages from the original NES game, including the secret final stage. As a result, there is only one ending in this version, despite the lingering presence of secret collectable Krusty statues. And the ending that's here is quite a come down in comparison, too.
The SMS version was only released in Europe and Brazil. It was Game Gear only in the US.
I liked Bart vs. the World on the NES. it wasn't anywhere near as good as Bart vs. the Space Mutants in my opinion, but it was a reasonably alright game.
At a quick glance, screenshots might make this look like quite an upgrade, too. Unfortunately, this is not the case - not consistently, at least. The sprites are better detailed and have more color, as you'd expect, and the China stage is much better overall to look at. However, the rest of the stages are pretty fugly. Later stages are particularly problematic, with the dark backgrounds becoming really splotchy and patchy with their details to the point that you can't really make out important details anymore, like holes in the ground, or things that you can stand on (the graveyard stage is a nightmare with this). When this is coupled with the missing stages (a couple whole levels are missing, as are many of the mini-games) and the weirdly floaty controls that also got in the way in the Master System version of Bart vs. the Space Mutants, things start to look grim.
I'm sure if this is the only one you played as a kid, these issues probably wouldn't bother you as much. I'll stick with the NES version, personally.
-And here's the real kicker: of all the minigames that they could have chosen to preserve in this cart, did they really have to keep those awful sliding-tile puzzles? Goddammit I hate those! I hated the toy plastic ones, and I hate them in my video games even more. Why haven't they yet been relegated to the realm of cheaply made Chinese plastic prizes that you never wanted as a prize but got anyway!?
