In 1997, Richard Garriott revolutionised what we've come to call the MMO genre when he - and his team - released Ultima Online. It was a sandbox world where progression was an initiation not a right, and you could make your way as a merchant and crafter as well as you could an adventurer. 17 years later he's finally ready to follow up that game with Shroud of the Avatar, a modest Kickstarted online (and off) RPG, but one with no less ambition. It's Ultima Online 2 in so many ways. But does it show enough promise in pre-alpha to signal that Garriott has still got what it takes? Eurogamer writer Bertie talks Wes through the Steam Early Access release.
