Previously, Davilas did the Dark Brotherhood quests "Breaching Security" and "The Cure for Madness". After framing and killing Gaius Maro, Davilas pursued Cicero to the Dawnstar Sanctuary but left him alive. Now, Davilas will continue the Dark Brotherhood quest line with "Recipe for Disaster".

After resuming, Davilas talks to Festus Krex in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. To learn the identity and location of the Gourmet, Davilas must talk to Anton Virane, the cook at Understone Keep in Markarth. Davilas should also kill Anton. Then, Davilas must find and kill the Gourmet and take his or her Writ of Passage. For a bonus, he must hide the Gourmet's body.

Davilas heads home to Lakeview Manor to manage his inventory. He also leaves Lydia behind.

Afterwards, he fast-travels to Understone Keep in Markarth. He finds Anton Virane in the kitchen, even at night. When intimidated, Anton reveals that the Gourmet is an Orc named Balagog gro-Nolob. Balagog is currently at Nightgate Inn. If Davilas lies and claims that he will not kill Anton, then Anton will remain where he is.

When that is done, Davilas kills Anton as required. Afterwards, he must go kill Balagog.

Then, Davilas fast-travels to Nightgate Inn in the mountains north of Whiterun. Davilas talks to Balagog in the Nightgate Inn Cellar. When Davilas threatens him, Balagog will hide behind some barrels. Davilas kills him there. This is enough to satisfy the requirement to hide Balagog's body. Then, Davilas takes the Gourmet's Writ of Passage from Balagog.

Davilas fast-travels back to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. He reports to Festus Krex. "Recipe for Disaster" complete! Davilas earns some gold, and for hiding Balagog's body, he also earns the Nightweaver's Band, a ring that improves Sneak and reduces the cost of Destruction magic.

The next primary quest, "To Kill an Empire", begins right away. Davilas must report to Astrid.

Davilas talks to Astrid. Now, it's time for him to take care of the Emperor. She directs him to go to Castle Dour in Solitude and show the Gourmet's Writ of Passage to Commander Maro. She gives him a poison, Jarrin Root, to mix into the Emperor's stew. Afterwards, Davilas should be able to escape.

Then, Davilas fast-travels to Solitude. At Castle Dour, he presents the Gourmet's Writ of Passage to Commander Maro, who lets him enter the Emperor's Tower.

In the kitchen, Davilas finds Gianna. She insists that Davilas put on a Chef's Hat. After taking a Chef's Hat and putting it on, he talks to Gianna to get started. The four first ingredients that she asks about do not really matter. Afterwards, Davilas tells her to put in the final ingredient, the Jarrin Root.

Now that the poisonous potage has been prepared, Davilas follows Giana up to the dining room. In the dining room, the Emperor insists on his right to taste the food first. Big mistake.

Afterawrds, Davilas takes the alternate exit from the dining room. However, he is soon discovered by Commander Maro! It sounds like there is a traitor in the Dark Brotherhood. Worse yet, Maro has reneged on his deal to that traitor and chosen to sack the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. Now, Davilas must flee Solitude. On the way out, he pays his bounty to a Solitude guard.

The Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary is no longer a fast-travel target, so Davilas fast-travels to the nearby Roadside Ruins. He finds hostile Penitus Oculatus Agents on the way to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. "To Kill an Empire" complete!

The next primary quest, "Death Incarnate", begins right away. Davilas must enter the sanctuary, which he does after taking out the agents outside. Within, he finds more Penitus Oculatus Agents, who are attacking the Dark Brotherhood members and burning the place.

Davilas soon finds Nazir, who is being attacked by Arcturus. After defeating Arcturus, Davilas speaks to Nazir about the situation. Then, Davilas and Nazir begin trying to find a way out of the Sanctuary.

Along the way, the Night Mother speaks to Davilas. Davilas enters the Night Mother's Coffin. After some sounds of destruction, the Night Mother tells Davilas to talk to Astrid. Then, Nazir releases him from the Night Mother's Coffin.
