The books. The damn books. Nobody told Aesmer he HAD to personally get them back, just that nobody is going to figure out the damn orb unless he DOES get them back. And of course nobody else at the College is going to do it, they are all too busy smoking Skooma or something. So he and Onmund head to Valtheim Towers, fail to negotiate their passage over the bridge, fight the bandits, and then head up to Fellglow Keep to fight a fort full of mages.

Aesmer and Onmund. They are... The Library Police. And they're here for your overdue books. Better pay your fines or you will get burned to a crisp by angry atronachs.

(Maybe that's why there are so many ruined books in Skyrim. The Library Police are all battle mages, and mages like to use fire and lightning and such.)
