1. Report to the Arch-Mage: CHECK
2. Practis ur magicz: CHECK
3. Try not to die: CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK and more CHECKS.
It's just another day in the life of a college student at the College of Winterhold.

Aesmer D'zinnda is a high elf magic user. The Thalmor hate his family, so Aesmer can't get an education back home. His family sent him to Skyrim, to the College of Winterhold.

Aesmer's family may secretly hate him. Or at least not care if he lives very long. In fact, all the students at the College of Winterhold probably have families who hate them very much and so they pay profoundly negligent teachers like Tolfdir to arrange for the honorable accidental deaths of their offspring in the name of "research."

This is why Tolfdir gives a lecture on safety and then immediately proceeds to violate every tenet of safety and faculty responsibility in the book. He was trying to find out which of the new students was the most safety-conscious, and bump them off first. That's why he choose Aesmer.

Those who manage to survive despite this process, become faculty.

I bet if you were to look into the family life of every instructor at the college, their families hate them and tried to get them bumped off "accidentally" by sending them to the howling arctic wastes to play with dangerous magic. That's why the Arch-Mage doesn't actually have to do anything to keep his job: being Arch-Mage just means you survived the longest.
