Conor here ... This week we will have a look at some of my favorite games on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Emulation was performed via the LR-snes9x emulator on RetroPie, running on a Raspberry Pi 4b (8GB), recorded onto OBS at 25 frames a second, with the 2xsal. help video shader applied. For controls, I used a generic SNES style USB controller.
The SNES was quite rare in Ireland when I was growing up, I & my friends all got SEGA Mega Drives. The only time I got to play it was on holiday in England at my cousin's house. The big attraction back then was Street Fighter 2, which was exclusively available on the SNES at that time (in the early 1990s). I do like the SNES bright colors & sharp graphics, and there are some nice console exclusives too, but I still think the Mega Drive had a better selection of games!
Please note that if some of the videos here seem to slow down, it is because of the 25 frames second recording rather than the hardware struggling. When you play directly off the Pi 4 to the television all the games play FLAWLESSLY...
Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels 2 - this is a ROM hack I made by combining Super Mario World with an old Japanese exclusive game (Super Mario Bros Special) that was released on PCs in 1986. Addictive gameplay & bright graphics make all Super Mario games timeless classics.
Contra 3 - I first saw this on Games Master (1993 ... S2, E21) where cringe boy band East 17 had to get through the opening level with 5 lives. Great run & gun action with an impressive soundtrack, the difficulty is VERY tough.
Earth Worm Jim - Had this on the Mega Drive, good to see some images used in a game, such as a worm in a robotic suit!
Street Fighter 2 Turbo - Iconic game that was the main selling point to the SNES. This is the Japanese version that has the correct names for each boss character.
Final Fight 3 - Good beat em up but not as good as Streets of Rage ;)
Saturday Night Slam Masters - This game is a lot of fun, big goofy wrestlers in a royal rumble punch up.
Star Fox 2 - This is a prototype game that was never released. You can still see debug data in the top left! Apparently, Nintendo had it 95% ready to go but canceled it as it would be compared unfavorably to the new 32 bit games of the time (1995). No idea what's going on as it's all in Japanese!
Super Mario Kart - Great game, but for some reason, my character had massive oversteer, hence I was lapped by everyone else ...
Super Bomber Man 2 - This game is a lot of fun, very addictive but still challenging. Another one broadcasted on Games Master (1994 ... S4, E6).
Desert Strike - I played this to death on the Mega Drive, such a landmark in gaming. Huge open map with a non-linear level design, you could play through the first level a hundred different ways & never get bored.
