SEGA Mega Drive emulation on RetroPie - Raspberry Pi 4b 8GB | Rea vlog
expand for full description ... Welcome to our channel, Rea vlog. Filipina Foreigner Husband Philippines & Ireland. My husband would like to share some retro games footage !!
Conor here ... This week we will have a look at some of my favorite games on the SEGA Mega Drive. Emulation was performed via the lr-genesis-plus-gx emulator on RetroPie, running on a Raspberry Pi 4b (8GB), recorded onto OBS at 25 frames a second, with the 2xsal.glslp video shader applied. For controls I used a generic SNES style USB controller.
Santa Claus brought me a Mega Drive for Christmas 1991, with Sonic 1 & Road Rash to play on it. This machine started my fascination with video gaming long before I ever set foot in an arcade. Although the SNES arguably had better graphics, I believe the Mega Drive had a much better selection of games. In pre-Internet days I got all my info from video games magazines & the Games Master tv show. Pretty much all of my friends had Mega Drives too and we would swap them around with each other. Also games were cheap to rent from Xtravision for the weekend (£3 I think ?), so I always had something entertaining to play during the long cold Irish winters.
Please note that if some of videos here seem to slowdown, it is because of the 25 frame a second recording rather than the hardware struggling. When you play directly off the Pi 4 to a television all the games play FLAWLESSLY ....
# Outrun - ported over from the classic arcade game, I like the retro style music & colorful graphics.
# Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - best in the series! My father surprised me one day (1992) when he brought this home from a business trip for me, no idea how he knew what to buy ! The fast gameplay is incredibly addictive & the soundtrack had alot of effort put into it.
# The Revenge of Shinobi - I played this game to death, such great level designs & the soundtrack is top-notch. Started my fascination with all thins Japanese !
# Golden Axe 2 - I think I seen this in the Diamond Cinema arcade before I played it on the Mega Drive ? Not a bad port to the home console.
# Street Fighter of Rage 2 - a hack of Streets of Rage 2, with Street Fighter characters ... Streets of Rage 2 is defo my favorite Mega Drive game of all time. Side scrolling beat 'em up action with gritty yet colorful graphics. The Chicago House style soundtrack alone puts it top of the list !
# RoboCop Versus The Terminator - I remember getting this for my birthday (1994) after reading the hype about it being the most violent video game ever made. Over the top splashes of blood is about as bad as it gets. The gameplay itself is quite good, with some very nice weapons to choose from.
# Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing - seen this first on Games Master (1992 ... S2,E21) and was impressed by the graphics, one of the few boxing games on the Mega Drive.
# Alien 3 - I first seen this on the "Mega Preview Tape" VHS cassette that was included with the first issue of the Mean Machines SEGA magazine (1992), which I then bought every month. Great run & gun action, the dark brooding soundtrack adds to the tense gameplay.
# Road Rash - such a great racing game, adds an interesting mechanic where you can punch & kick other players off their bikes, and sometimes snatch weapons off them (batons, chains, etc ...). Used to have a tournament with my friends where we would each do one race & see how high we could finish.
# Ghouls & Ghosts - my local Xtravision had this & I rented it several times a year. Such tough but fun gameplay, I once made it to the second level & felt like I had won the lottery ! This game is a near perfect port of the arcade version.
# Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy - a hack of Mortal Kombat 3, that includes all the characters (including bosses / secret characters) from all three Mortal Kombat games. The buzz around this game was massive, while SNES exclusively had the Street Fighter franchise the Mega Drive had Mortal Kombat, in the beginning anyway ... one time I was off sick from school for a week (1994) and my mother rented Mortal Kombat 2 for me so I wouldnt get bored, how thoughtfull !
# Predator 2 - I used to rent this when there was nothing else available, not the greatest game ever but fun all the same, especially when the Predator kills a hostage with his lazer !
# Afterburner 2 - port of the famous arcade game, I could never figure out how to lock on with the missiles ...
