Conor here ... This week we will have a look at some games on the SEGA Atomiswave arcade system. Emulation was performed via the REDREAM emulator on RetroPie, running on a Raspberry Pi 4b (8GB), recorded onto OBS at 25 frames a second, with no video shader applied. For controls I used a generic Xbox 360 style USB controller.

SEGA prematurely dropped support for its Dreamcast console in the early 00s. The problem was it still had hundreds of thousands of hardware components leftover in its warehouses. The solution ? Make them into arcade machines ! Thus the Atomiswave system appeared in 2004, and was adopted by several companies (SNK being the most prominent) as its new arcade hardware. About 2 dozen games were released for the system before it was retired. A few weeks ago, some homebrew developers released Dreamcast GDI versions of the Atomiswave collection of games. Seeing as the hardware is identical, they simply re-mapped a few BIOS settings & defaulted the games to "free play" mode (to avoid simulating inserting coins).

Please note that if some of videos here seem to slowdown, it is because of the 25 frames a second recording rather than the hardware struggling. When you play directly off the Pi 4 to a television all the games play FLAWLESSLY ....

# Faster than Speed - silky smooth graphics on this game, like a mixture of Scud Racer & Need for Speed. The only complaint is the tracks are a bit repetitive.

# Fist of the North Star - I remember watching the Manga movie this is based on late at night as a kid. I love the over the top action & rich detail of the artwork, the animation is very smooth also.

# Guilty Gear X - this frantic fighting game with Manga style graphics was a massive hit in Japan on its release.

# Metal Slug 6 - not a huge difference between the graphics on this & on the old mid 90s versions, the only improvement I can see is the background graphics.

# Knights of Valour: The Seven Spirits - a semi 3D side scrolling beat em up by Taiwan based IGS, its rip off of CAPCOM's Warriors of Fate series. Although not well known globally, IGS games are very popular in East Asia.

# Samurai Spirits: Tenkaichi Kenkakuden - aka Samurai Shodown 6, again not a massive improvement graphics wise from the older games on the Neo Geo MVS hardware

# Demolish Fist - side scrolling 3D beat em up thats alot like Streets of Rage, quite hard difficulty !

# Neo Geo Battle Coliseum - 2 on 2 tag team fighting game that allows one fighter to rest & regain health after the switch, has a good mix of characters from the Neo Geo universe (KOF, Last Blade, World Heros, etc ...)

# Rumble Fish - quality fighting game, very slick presentation & well animated characters

# King of Fighters XI - although I liked the new characters in this game I found the fighters graphics very dated & pixilated, especially infront of the new backgrounds .
