Neo Geo emulation on RetroPie - Raspberry Pi 4b 8GB | MVS arcade version | Rea vlog
expand for full description ... Welcome to our channel, Rea vlog. Filipina Foreigner Husband Philippines & Ireland. My husband would like to share some retro games footage !!
Conor here ... This week we will have a look at some of my favorite games on the SNK Neo Geo. Emulation was performed via the lr-fbneo emulator on RetroPie, running on a Raspberry Pi 4b (8GB), recorded onto OBS at 25 frames a second, with the 2xsal.glslp video shader applied. For controls I used a generic SNES style USB controller.
Before the Internet was available, the only place to see the Neo Geo AES console was on the Games Master show, as it was only on sale in the USA & Japan. SNK was best known for its colorful 2D fighting games, which can still be found in every arcade in the world to the present day. The high price tag (+$600) gave you arcade-perfect games at home & a whole lot of street cred with your friends ! I bought the CD version on eBay a few years ago & maybe if I win the lottery some day I can buy the original cartridge version ;) As all the arcade games were ported to the home console, I will be playing the MVS arcade versions for simplicity.
Please note that if some of videos here seem to slowdown, it is because of the 25 frames a second recording rather than the hardware struggling. When you play directly off the Pi 4 to a television all the games play FLAWLESSLY ....
# Waku Waku 7 - this game is a lot of fun, its bright color scheme & over the top special moves makes it a joy to play every time.
# Garou: Mark of the Wolves - the final game in the Fatal Fury series, although its hard to tell as almost all the characters are new. This game was a massive hit in Asia on its release and was still going strong years later, judging by the long queue to get playing it at the SM Mega Mall in Manila last time I was there (2011).
# The King of Fighters 2000 - this is the final K.O.F. game released before SNK went bankrupt and it is probably my favorite of the lot. The slick animation & colorful graphics are to be expected, but the pounding soundtrack & new Continue Game bonus feature help to make each gaming session fresh time after time. As only 100 cartridges were made for the Neo Geo AES they are worth over $5,000 each on the collectors market nowadays.
# Rage of the Dragons - I only started playing this hidden gem recently, it has a very steep difficulty level ! As always for a Neo Geo fighting it has beautiful art work, classy animation, frantic action .... the soundtrack aint bad either !
# Sengoku 3 - hack & slash beat 'em up action, I like the music very much although the gameplay is a bit repetitive after a while.
# SNK vs Capcom SVC Chaos - crossover 2D fighting game with characters from SNK & Capcom series such as The King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Street Fighter 2, Darkstalkers ... I first played this in Kuala Lumpur Airport (2013), very impressed with the K.O.F. style animations though I would have preferred a wider mix of S.F.2 characters to be selectable.
# Power Instinct Matrimelee - a great fighting game that doesn't take itself too seriously, the bright color scheme & slapstick action combine very well with the cheerful soundtrack.
# Double Dragon - based on the 1994 Double Dragon movie, which itself was based on the iconic original beat em' up arcade game. Stylish artwork & graphics, this represents the early style of Neo Geo fighting games.
# Savage Reign - the art work & animation in this game had alot of effort put into it. Great fun to play & a break from the more serious K.O.F type fighting games.
# Ninja Masters - not a bad effort, though not as good as Samurai Showdown / The Last Blade series of games. This was released in the mid 90s though the graphics are more like the earlier Neo Geo fighting games.
# Far East of Eden : Kabuki Klash - a spin of the popular 90s Japanese console R.P.G. series Tengai Makyo, this fighting game takes place in feudal Japan. The lush graphics & over the top game play makes it a stand out title, with random power ups & mythical beasts adding to the gameplay !
