Sonic Movie Character Development - Shadow Day 034
Continuing on with adding the fur cards today's session was simply taking the hair cards textures into Maya, trying to reduce the paint effects paintable surface down to something less performance heavy (had several crashes starting out lol) and continue tackling the process starting with the facial region. I need to get pieces of the face fur cards in and have them imported in CC4 to get them weighted to the face. From there I needed to fix some in CC4 shaders just to get an idea about any bad games or fur card color blending issues. Next I will take this test "beard" (it needs to be set to beard to make sure it works with the face expression morphs) and bring it over into Unreal to setup the real final skin shaders and fur card shaders to check lighting, color matching, and color blending overlays where black fur and other colors dont naturally mix so well. I may have to make some in between blend color materials in UE5 but I want to avoid this because I dont want too many materials on the surface. In the end I may just use vertex color masking to use the same shader and just mask off colors per region for smoother blending if need be while keeping the character more performance savvy.
If you are a CC4 user you may wanna follow this whole process just to keep up with some success stories, missteps and backtracks. There will be plenty of mistakes made I assure you, but the point is taking advantage of these pre-rigged humanoids, putting your own new bones and appendages on them and still retaining CC4s built in facial rigging if you are like me, a character modeler/texturer with no animation chops whatsoever. Come along for the journey, this mess is finna be wild!
