Space Engineers 2023 USS Reliant VS USS Excelsior
Both ships had equal opportunity and generally they almost always do. In this case I used Reliant to defeat Excelsior and some time in the near future I'm sure I'll use Excelsior to beat Reliant... But how long will it take?
You are catching on quickly. Brinkmanship is often a matter of overcoming a disadvantage and in this case we see Reliant doing a beautiful job of doing so by covering it's engineering bay carefully during the exchanges. The down side of a Miranda in battle is that by having no secondary hull to cover using that saucer, one is sporting a disadvantage especially if they pass for aft weapon use or god forbid run away. Often Miranda VS fights are face to face, or face by strafe, but in motion the back end of a Miranda has a lot of vulnerable spots that make easy targets. It takes practice to make it as dangerous as it can be.
The same is true of every ship that has a generally weak spot, as the design often compensate for this by having an extra weapon array down there... as a deterrent, which almost forces you to expose the weakness to get the upper hand in firepower. Such is the case with TOS Enterprise but at least her Core is midship. The refit had the core near the floor which is an Achilles heel if ever one existed.
That probably has a lot to do with why auxiliary power is almost always "elsewhere."
Nevertheless a ship without her warp core is on borrowed time. Low power limping to Starbases with reduced speed, shields, and weapon power, for repairs certainly prevents one from becoming employee of the month. Doubly so when a whole nacelle is gone, or worse a saucer. One must wonder at exactly which point a ship gets banged up "so badly," as to be a legitimate embarrassment to the entire crew.
