After the abysmal PS2 version of Spiderman Web of Shadows, you'd think anything would be better than nothing out of your friendly neighbourhood's best known superhero. As it happens, Spider-Man Friend or Foe is an absolute blast.

Developed by Next Level Games, of recent Punch-Out!! success on the Nintendo Wii, the game follows much of the same conventions found in beat 'em ups like the recent Spyborgs. Spider-Man Friend or Foe makes use of intricate combos and moves that can be upgraded. I also dig that the game has the same jump in and drop out platforming gameplay of the Lego Star Wars series. It is designed for a casual audience in mind so the difficulty of Friend or Foe isn't too rough, if you die you instantly respawn where you left off with a minor point deduction. The cartoony graphics also resemble that of the CG Spider-Man series of the mid 2000s. Yet this Spider-Man game is seemingly based around the films too with many of the character designs taken from it.

Basically it's accessible, easy going fun. If you've got friends round it is worth playing and I'd recommend it as something to play alongside a child be it a son, daughter, etc, etc. Visually Friend or Foe hold up to Playstation 2 standards and the witty insights of the characters bring about a chukcle every so often.

My only major complaint with Spider-Man Friend or Foe is that it can grow repetitive. Level designs seem to repeat themselves, as does the pattern of enemy attacks. Occasionally you run into a Marvel universe character who can be used as the second character supporting Spider-Man, this usually involves recruiting villains like the Green Goblin as shown in the video.

Considering the game can be found for less than £5 now I believe it is worth a buy. Give it a looksie.
