In Dawn of the Dragon, there is a parry system. Normally, parrying reduces damage taken from light attacks by 80% and damage taken by strong attacks by 0% (they break the parry, usually strong attacks are the ones that deal a lot of knockback, but not always). But with the Gold Helmet, parrying reduces damage taken from light attacks by 100% and damage taken from strong attacks by 80%.

Since the lava wave deals 1000 damage (which is enough to one shot a dragon even with max upgrades, since both dragons start with 300hp and gain 100hp for each upgrade, Spyro ending with 800hp and Cynder at 700hp with full life upgrades) and is considered a light attack by the game, this means you can parry it and it will only deal 200 damage without the helmet. But since the hitbox is so big, you'll just get combo'd and die anyway. However, if you use the Gold Helmet, parrying will completely negate all the damage from the lava wave. All you have to do is hold the parry button without moving. Even if it doesn't look like it, when you are holding the parry button in the air, the dragon is technically parrying, and it will show as soon as you get hit.

This isn't really a glitch and more of an oversight by the developpers. It doesn't really have any purpose since the lava wave is very easier to avoid if you just keep flying, but it looks silly.
