In beta 1.13.5 of SteamVR they added an experimental Room View 3D mode for the Index headset. It's using computer vision with the headset cameras to render a mesh textured with the camera feed, this to give a much better representation of reality to the VR user.

The cameras on the Index headset are placed well beyond the average human IPD so the world feels scaled down when using the camera feeds directly, which is why this mode feels like a big upgrade as the scale ends up correct, even if it's not a perfect reconstruction.
