This basic video tutorial shows you a way how to make a stunlock for an enemy object in gamemaker studio. The whole concept is focused on state machines.

How can this be achievend?

The idea is that there are states in which the enemy is looping depending on the artificial intelligence in place. Here I have setup a very rudimentary ai and it loops between the states of being idle or when the player is close an attack state followed by an attacking state. The attack state is simply a windup for the actual attacking of the enemy. This whole cycle can be interrupted by the player with an additional hit state which returns after a cooldown to the idle state. That interruption prevents the enemy loop between idle and attacking.
