Sunrider 4.2a Hard Mode: Mission 3 (Skipped 4)
This is a run of Sunrider's Hard Mode in version 4.2a. I made this to give other players an idea of the strategies I used to win. All missions will be completed without using mid-battle saves, to ensure that the strategy is consistent enough to be replicated to some extent. Depending on what attacks hit or miss, you may not be able to follow my strategy exactly, so improvise as needed!
Mission 3 is the "Stop Slavers" route according to an internal numbering system the devs made. Taking this route means we're not doing the Mission 4 (PACT Spire) in this run. I'm taking the Morality route missions because IMO they're slightly more difficult and less rewarding in terms of resources earned.
So I actually tried out something different from most of my other runs so far; I used lasers more than before. I tended to only upgrade missiles and kinetics due to my knowledge of what awaits in the later missions. This time I actually sink a couple of upgrades into Black Jack's laser accuracy to help me tag the armored targets in this mission. $250 for a flat 11% accuracy ain't bad at all!
The important thing to keep yourself from taking more damage than you can repair, is to keep the Black Jack in front of the formation. It dodges much better than the Sunrider and you'll take less damage overall if it's diverting some enemy fire. I also have the Black Jack kill a Pirate Grunt on the first turn to draw enemy aggro and keep fire off of the somewhat fragile Liberty. Aggro is a hidden mechanic where units that do damage or destroy enemies draw more enemy fire; it's useful to understand it on a basic level to control the amount of damage done to you.
In fact, I take so little damage that I actually have Chigara shoot lasers instead of repairing at times. It's weak, but good enough to make a difference against the unshielded pirates.
Oh, after the Pirate Bombers shoot their missiles they'll go up to you and look for an opening to use Assault. If your HP doesn't drop much though, you'll never see it because your armor is too high for them to consider using Assault. That's why you can wait until they're right in your face to use the big guns!
It's more dodges than I usually see, for sure. I haven't worked out the typical enemy accuracy rates in this run of the mission but I might've been lucky with all those dodges. Still quite a bit of leeway though, you won't lose much firepower if you have Chigara repair instead of attack!
