#SuperOldGameSaturday - Mad Maestro (PlayStation 2)
Originally Recorded/Aired On May 22nd, 2021
I've mentioned music rhythm games on the #SuperOldGameSaturday show before, but given that most of them utilize licensed music, I can't stream most of them. Not so with Mad Maestro, an underrated, sometimes strange and not exactly well voice-acted 2001/2002 PlayStation 2 conducting game with a soundtrack comprised entirely of classical music, so I streamed that this past week and it generated more interest and deep discussion from the chat than I would have thought (as well as branches off to topics like Billy Joel, The Brak Show, Die Hard and edutainment PC gaming companies from the 1990s). This was one of only 5 games in Eidos Interactive's Fresh Games brand, focusing on off-kilter titles from Japan like this one from Desert Productions (the others were Swingerz Golf, Legaia 2, R-Type Final and of course, Mr. Mosquito), but this a pretty unique and fun game that utilizes the Dual Shock 2 controller's pressure-sensitive buttons quite well to really draw you in as you play as Takt, conducting the Bravo Youth Orchestra to save the local concert hall from being demolished and building up your group to put on a big show for the town. I also learned that there was a Japan-only sequel to this that I feel I want to stream in the future, but for the time being, hope you enjoy this hidden music gaming gem and the fancy edits that I had to put into this one (and if you like what you see here, stop by https://www.twitch.tv/captainditrag each Saturday at 7 PM EST to see these streams live and join the conversations on what we play each week)!
