In this chapter, after a bit of snooping around and with more than a little help from Oscar, Kate finally locates and enters Dana's old bedroom, where she discovers Leon's last letter to his lover, delivered from the Baltayar Mountains. In it, he narrates how the Origin expedition, after many weeks spent in total frustration, finally hit upon a young Gorun specimen who had become incapacitated because of a broken leg. Unfortunately, Leon turned out to be the only member of the party willing to treat the Gorun as a reasonable being, and after the young one's mother arrived in the camp to take him back, the only one to hold back Berger, the expedition's leader, from shooting the specimen. In the resulting scuffle, Berger ended up mortally wounded, and Leon had no choice but to flee the camp, separating himself from the expedition and vanishing in the mountains...
