The Battle of Olympus (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Broderbund's 1989 NES game, The Battle of Olympus.
As a kid, I both loved and hated this game. My dad would take me down on most weekends to the Hollywood Video (next to a Little Caesars! Really awesome Friday nights included stopping there, too) down the road from the Weapons Station at Goose Creek (any other Navy brats know the one I'm talking about?). I'd always fight with myself between this game and the newest release I wanted to play, and about half the time, this game won. It's very similar to Zelda II in many ways (and that makes sense, given that the designer said that he based many of the mechanics and animations on Zelda II's). If it's not already evident in the way the game controls, just check out the animation when you get hit, or the very beginning of the last boss fight. It's also a more focused game than Adventures of Link, which is great. If you explore everything and listen to the clues, you'll figure everything out (granted, it still takes a bit of luck striking at everything, but still, it's not anywhere near as obtuse as you find with the (lack of) useful hints in The Legend of Zelda. I just wish that you had a weapon that stuck out a bit further than his club/sword/rod. You get hit waaaay too easily when trying to make a clean hit.
Whatever, that's a minor quibble. I never did beat this for all the times we rented it back when it was reasonably new, but I did pick it up again in the late 90s and finally destroyed it. Epic game, and fairly educational too. And that music!
There are three spots in the video where I edited out some olive grinding. They're pretty apparent when they happen - you'll see the olive count jump way higher during a scene transition on these occasions. The twenty minutes or so I cut from the video in these three spots showed absolutely nothing but jumping around a screen or two killing stuff. It was pretty dull, so I cut it out for the sake of watchability.
