A playthrough of the CD-Rom version of LucasArts' 1993 PC graphic adventure, Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle.

This sequel to Maniac Mansion is one of the best written, scripted, and outright memorable graphic adventures I've ever had the pleasure to play. It somehow manages to trump Maniac Mansion - which is no small feat - but it's not just a byproduct of the five years of technological improvements between the two. Sure, the graphics and voices are grade A in all respects (and still stand well today - imagine what a sight this would have been to behold in 1993 running on your shiny multimedia PC! It boggles the mind how this only required a 386 with 4 megs of RAM!

If you've never played this, you're probably either too young or not into PC gaming. Not that there's anything wrong with either of those, but if you don't know it, please do yourself a favor and play this. I couldn't begin to count the number of sleepless nights i spent in front of the glowing CRT trying to figure out how to get the fake barf off of the ceiling, how to get a mummy to win a beauty contest, or how to blow up George Washington's wooden teeth. There are so many awesome jokes here - verbal and visual - and so many allusions to other works that you'll never get bored. There's zero filler - just killer design and writing. The puzzles are also absolutely insane, but somehow fair. The solutions are about as absurd as it gets, and you will get stuck playing, but never because it's impossible or unfair. It just expects you to think logically within an illogical frame. Once you get the flow, it all becomes pretty intuitive. You'll find yourself wondering how you didn't figure it out sooner once you've solved a stumper. The answer is usually that you just didn't think far enough outside of the box.

If you want to see how well the style still holds up - check out "Day of the Tentacle Remastered" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iM2gl4Mz5YM). At first glance it looks almost identical - it's so good that even almost 25 years later, on the surface, the only seemingly only overt changes are the improved resolution, details added as a result of the increase in color depth and resolution, and the interface. Then look at most other games of the era that have been "improved" - many of them barely resemble the original. The real key to the remake is that it looks like you remember it looking - NOT how it actually looked - the graphics were totally redone. The update is thoroughly awesome, and very much so deserves any fan's time and money. The Star Wars ranch is just that much better for having this one in its stable.

And if I can insert a small plea here - please support Double Fine's upcoming remaster if you want to continue seeing the classics! I mean, between Monkey Island, Zak McCracken, Loom, Full Throttle, Sam n Max, and more... but really, what more would you need in order to scream "Take my money"? They've already got me :)
