The devs INTENTIONALLY left this BRUTAL glitch in Ninja Gaiden (NES) - A Wild Glitch Appears!
731There's an infamous glitch in Ninja Gaiden for the NES that changes the way restarting at checkpoints works for the final three boss fights. It's a glitch that makes the game ten times harder than it's supposed to be. What makes it even more brutal in my opinion is the fact that the developers knew about this bug during playtesting, but decided to leave it in the game to increase the difficulty. Here's the Level 6 Glitch that makes Ninja Gaiden so notorious.
Normally when you lose a life in Ninja Gaiden, you'll respawn from the last checkpoint in whatever section of the level you've reached. For the most part, the game's difficulty is manageable, because even though you will lose 9999 lives during a casual playthrough, you can still make slow and steady progress. Even when you get a Game Over, you will simply restart from the beginning of the SECTION of the level you've reached.
So for example, if you make it to the second checkpoint of Level 5-3 then get a game over, you will restart from the first checkpoint of Level 5-3. Not a huge deal.
However, if you lose even a SINGLE LIFE to one of the game's final three bosses, you will be sent all the way back to the start of Level 6-1. So in other words, dying on 6-4 or 6-5 will send you all the way back to the start of level 6-1, which is kind of unfair!
According to game artist Masato Kato - who is credited in the game as RUNMARU - this glitch was discovered at some point during development, but Tecmo ultimately decided to keep this bug in the final version of Ninja Gaiden. https://ninjagaiden.fandom.com/wiki/Ninja_Gaiden_(NES)
