“Darkest Dungeon is a game about the human response to stress.” That’s a quote from Tyler Sigman, the game’s design director. Stress is piled onto your characters with every step in the beloved roguelike. Fighting monsters, investigating curios, even just walking around -- it all leads to more and more stress, which can activate the harsh Affliction System.

Afflictions are the trademark of Darkest Dungeon, but their origin might surprise you. They’re not pulled from any other video game: they’re inspired by the 2001 HBO military drama Band of Brothers. Yes, really. Let’s take a deep dive into that.

If you’ve never played Darkest Dungeon before, you’re in luck. It’s available on a wide variety of platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and even iOS and PS Vita.
