24Full gameplay longplay, playthrough & walkthrough of the original SEGA Model 2 arcade version of the original House of the Dead. We've already covered the SEGA Saturn port and with a remake due soon it times to take a look at this icon arcade game. A fairly late Model 2 game that didn't arrive in western arcades until after Model 3 had been released in 1997. It pushed the board to its very limit and was a smash hit in arcades. With it been the first adventure starting AMS agents Rogan and G as they blast their way through the creations of Dr. Curien, Chariot, Hermit and the final battle against the Magician. Warning just as a heads up as this uses a lightgun the screen flashes white a lot during the video.
The original game still remains the best in the series to boot as it got the atmosphere and plot just perfect. The sheer number of routes through the stages meant the game had huge replay value as players found their favourite run, with so much to see and explore. Something missing from the 3rd and 4th games and cut back in the 2nd. The silly plot twists of the later games and an unbalanced difficulty make them just not as polished as the original. This is a perfect lightgun shooter with every element just right, it never fell unfair and the team here have one live cleared this with the lightgun in the past.
The biggest crime to date is the fact this version has never had a home port. SEGA AM1 had planned to port it to the Dreamcast as a bonus on House of the Dead 2, but they cut it due to the development time. These days it's said the source code has long since been lost. We do wonder if SEGA have check with Tantalus to see if they still have a copy as likely they were sent all the game assets when they ported the game to SEGA Saturn.
This is a true classic and the best zombie based lightgun title ever made. We can only hope a fully emulated version appears on home consoles in years to come. Time SEGA did a collection of The House of the Dead 1,2,3,4 and Scarlet Dawn on modern consoles. So enjoy this run, not a one credit clear, but we did get to the bonus room by rescuing all the scientist. Normal ending, didn't get a 62,000, for the best ending lost too many lives and didn't shoot enough coins. Played with a mouse due to the lack of PC lightgun support, but we are aware of some very promising PC LG projects we may look into in the future.

The arcade version of The House of the Dead has never been directly released on a home system. The home port on SEGA Saturn was put together in a couple of months and looked somewhat unfinished compared to the Saturn ports of Virtua Cop 1 & 2. With missing textures and content, that resulted in a version vastly inferior to the SEGA Model 2 arcade. As the PC port s based on the Saturn version it suffers with the same problems as the Saturn version.

Footage is captured from the Model 2 Emulator, sadly it's far from perfect and there are a number of glitches with the emulation. Model 2 emulation is way behind many other systems at present, captured at 60fps for easy of capture the games runs slightly slower. Played with the mouse due to the lack of PC lightgun support. Upscaled to UHD 4K to improve the video bit rate, watch in HD or UHD for best video playback on YouTube.
