If you love Alien Isolation VR or Cosmodread then you owe it to yourself to check out The Persistence VR mode, a horror roguelike game set aboard a spaceship filled with clones gone horribly wrong, explore, scavenge, upgrade and fight to make your way to the objective and avoid death for as long as physically possible. In my constant quest to find the very best VR roguelike games I've made my way to The Persistence this week, a game that feels very similar to the setup of Cosmodread with the clean visuals of Alien Isolation VR. The Persistence supports a VR mode but can also be played flat screen, due to this The Persistence VR controls are either keyboard and mouse or controller but don't let this put you off of this excellent VR roguelike.
This The Persistence gameplay / The Persistence VR gameplay was captured using my Oculus Quest 2 / Quest 2 PC VR link setup and it ran absolutely perfectly, crisp visuals, smooth framerates & tight controls (controller or keyboard) made this a great PC VR experience for the Quest 2 headset. If you're searching for horror roguelike games then this is a very strong entry into that genre, The Persistence VR throws you into the shoes of a brand new clone who is tasked with scouring the ship to complete objectives. On the way through the ship you must take down enemies to collect stemcells, scavenge for resources & purchase bigger and better gear to increase your chance of survival. Upon death you keep all upgrades you make to your character (increased health, damage, shield, stamina etc) and any weapons you unlock or upgrade remain that way for each new run, but you do need to craft them again at a crafting terminal.
The Persistence VR also does not hold back on the scares, for the most part the stealth based sci-fi horror game mechanics are tense and tight but the game finds exciting ways to switch the atmosphere up at the drop of a hat, leaving the player (well me anyway) terrified to push forward for fear of being ambushed by enemies creeping around the dark corners of The Persistence ship.
