Here's probably the easiest way to access the Chris Houlihan room in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the SNES.

Go to the graveyard just east of Sanctuary and find the top left gravestone. Clear the obstacles from in front of it, and push it to reveal an opening, but DON'T FALL IN! This can be a little tricky but it's not terribly difficult.

Now stand with Link's back to the edge of the hole and take a small step forward. Plant a bomb on the ground, then turn around to face the hole. The bomb should blast you into the hole, and you will end up in the secret Chris Houlihan room.

Inside this room, there's like 200 rupees or something, and a telepathy panel in the back room. Touching it reveals a message from someone named Chris Houlihan, who urges you to keep this room a secret (which we will not).

Essentially the purpose of the Chris Houlihan room is to act as a fail safe when the game doesn't know what Link's coordinates are supposed to be. So often, when Link enters a room or a hole in a way that wasn't intended, he might just end up here.
