In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES, there's a hidden game mechanic that increases the damage of your attacks if your character is below 50% health. As far as I know, this isn't mentioned in the instruction manual, so I'm not sure how you're supposed to figure this out unless you're like observant or something.

Generally, if your character is under half health, you will hit harder whether you're using your main weapon or a throwable weapon. The only exceptions are Raphael's sai and the boomerangs. Below is a table that shows normal damage values and boosted damage values.

Don 15 16
Mike 7 12
Raph 9 9
Leo 7 10
Shuriken 18 20
Boomerang 16 16
Triple Sh. 14 17
Scrolls 29 32

Anyway, this blew my mind when I first heard about it, because I've been playing this game since 1990 and had zero clue this mechanic existed.
