Mission 2 is a very gentle introduction to combat. I have gold - and consequently the ability to train my knights. The enemy doesn't. The resulting stomp is predictable.

There are still a few buildings to be introduced:

The metalworks makes tools, which are needed to equip most workers. I usually micromanage the hell out of this one, by forbidding everything except the tiny set of tools that I actually need.

The brewer makes beer. This has one use and one use only: a knight is trained from one unspecialised settler, one sword, onw shield, and one barrel of beer.
...and it hardly matters at all. To equip and fully train a knight requires about 6 chunks of coal, 2 chunks of iron ore, and 2 chunks of gold ore. All of that needs miners, which need to be fed. The extra cost of one pile of grain and one bucket of water hardly matters at all - particularly since those are renewable resources, and those mines will eventually run out.

The catapult, on the other hand, is a very big deal. Bombarding enemy buildings with catapults is a very cost-efficient way of killing trained knights. The only problem is that catapult warfare is very slow.

The warehouse is a place to store settlers and resources that aren't currently needed. They become very important once the settlement gets big, because long supply lines can be crippling.

Finally, we get the improved military buildings. Bigger buildings claim land in a larger radius, and they also house more knights. The stats are:

Barracks: 2 wood, holds 2 knights
Guardhouse: 2 wood, 3 stone, holds 3 knights
Watchtower: 3 wood, 4 stone, holds 6 knights
Fortress: 4 wood, 7 stone, holds 9 knights

The one thing that stands out here is that the watchtower is only slightly more expensive that a guardhouse, but its stats are much better.
