The Settlers 2, part 5: Grey is the new green
1What is this strange grey land? Don't worry, its a game from 1996 - it's just a palette swap.
We start very close to one enemy, but there is a giant wall of stone separating us - and we only have 2 stonecutters. Getting a metalworks up and running, churning out picks, is a priority. I did a decent job chewing through the stone to the west, but should have dealt with the south-east blockage faster, because there is semi-usable farmland beyond.
I've seen strategy guides recommend that you extract every last bit of ore from the mountains in your own territory before attacking the enemy. I disagree. Hitting the enemy early (which, in this game, means before the 4 hour mark) makes it possible to take their mountains and mine from them. This strategy does need some defensive catapults to avoid getting stomped, but stone is insanely plentiful on this level so that isn't much of a problem.
