A playthrough of Activision's 1989 NES game, The Three Stooges.

This video shows the best possible ending by earning over $20k by the final day.

What an insipid mess. The stooges' basic humor is here and intact, largely thanks to the quality presentation. The graphics are large, reasonably well animated, and there are a good number of digitized voice clips spread throughout to really give the impression of a quality product. Unfortunately, Cinemaware games are a tough act to meaningfully pull on hardware as the limited NES' is, and though this does an admirable attempt given the constraints, an admirable attempt does not always a good game make. Hell, the Amiga version looked fantastic, but all that did was distract from the "game".

And it doesn't end there! Oh, no! It ended up way later on becoming a Game Boy Advance game. And then - oh, and this is the best part - it got put on the PlayStation as a direct GBA port with badly scaled graphics. Seriously. (No, seriously. Don't believe me? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2-TbqGM-QQ) It doesn't even have the spoken intro bits of the NES version. Even if it was shovel/budgetware on the PS1, damn that's lazy.

The game's biggest problems lie in the random nature of many of the gameplay elements (you can easily get a game over just trying to select a game if you hit the mousetrap too many times), the lack of variety (the "games" consist of "get from A to B as fast as possible," "throw things," and "direct a spoon at a bowl." Ho hum. Providing the game doesn't just end your game at the beginning for any number of reasons, sheer boredom will make it a struggle to get to the end.

It's certainly flashy, but for all of its panache, there's no substance holding the game up. It's worth a couple of rounds to see the stooges in action, but you'll quickly stick it back on the shelf when you realize that nice looking still shots on the box and in magazines does not equate to good gameplay, nor even having gameplay to speak of.

In case you have seen it, I did upload a video of this game a few years ago, but it did not show the best ending, and it was only 480p30. So, hopefully that's a good justification for now replacing it.
