214A playthrough of LJN'S 1992 NES game, Town and Country Surf Designs II: Thrilla's Safari.
Thrilla's Safari, the direct sequel to the 1987 classic T&C Wood and Water Rage, at first glance appears to bear a lot in common with the first game. Both games are comprised of levels based on surfing and skateboarding, and both feature a giant ape as the character (sorry for fans of the guy in the red and white mask).
Obviously someone recognized that W&W Rage needed a bit more substance to its core to build a full sequel, so the levels this time have been transformed into large, multi-directional stages featuring deserts, volcanos, and other such things that fit the theme. It looks great, with tons of color and well defined sprites, and the controls are good.
Unfortunately none of the music lives up to the amazing stuff from the original, and in an attempt to expand on the form, most of the fun than came from the relative simplicity of the first game's levels has been lost. There's just too much going on here to pay attention to half the time, enemies will swarm you at every opportunity, and the whole thing is just not as fun. It's not bad, but it's not really a standout either. If you're bored, try it. If you have other stuff you'd prefer to play, this game probably won't satisfy you for longer than a few minutes.
